Argentina: protest prosecutions, collective memory and organizing

CURRENT · HISTORYFifth Social editorial
Connect contemporary protest-rights cases with archives of collective organizing, using dated legal advocacy and a public memory map while separating arguments from court decisions.
Follow the case beyond the march In a 24 June 2026 statement, the Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales explains its intervention as an amicus in proceedings concerning four people detained during a February 2024 protest against the Ley Bases. CELS argues that the convictions relied on police accounts despite weaknesses in the evidence and asks the reviewing court to overturn them. This is the organization's legal argument, not a substitute for the judgment or the appeal record. [1] Reading a prosecution Build a timeline with the arrest, accusation, evidence, judgment and later review. Ask whether evidence identifies an individual's conduct or treats participation in a crowd as proof. The CELS account offers a route into those questions and into the broader debate about policing public assembly. [1] Collective memory CELS also created Acá dejamos huella in the fiftieth-anniversary year of the 1976 coup. Its map identifies places of struggle and organizing from 1976 to the present. It offers another way to read political history: through locations, communities and the work of preserving memory. [2] Continue the research Read a location on the map beside a dated document or oral account. Follow how labor, neighborhood, human-rights and land movements preserve their histories, and distinguish an advocate's account from independently established findings.
