Independent reporting: keep the source trail

A place to compare reporting, public records and perspectives on world events, including stories that receive uneven attention. Independence is a reason to examine a source, not a guarantee of accuracy.

Reading paths and questions

Start with the original report. Identify the reporter or organization, publication date, location and sources they disclose. Distinguish on-the-ground reporting, witness testimony, analysis, an advocacy statement and an official announcement. Each can help answer a different question.

When documenting protest movements, France, Palestine or another developing story, record when an event happened separately from when an article appeared. Check whether a photograph or video has been reused from another place or date. Preserve the original caption and say what you could verify yourself.

The Library’s Open Files collect source-linked research on global movements, documentation and evidence. Their citations are starting points for reading across sources. The Live Feed is for newly shared reporting and everyday discussion; an archived guide is not a substitute for checking a current update.

Compare independent media with other reporting, public documents and direct statements. Look for attribution, corrections, ownership and a clear distinction between reporting and opinion. Repeated versions of one account are not independent confirmation. If a claim remains uncertain, label that uncertainty when sharing it.

Respect the privacy of people who appear in sensitive reporting. Discuss issues without publishing someone’s private contact details or asking members to expose their identity. Fifth Social uses public pseudonyms; that does not guarantee anonymity. Researchers, writers, translators, photographers and editors can also describe a project and seek collaborators through Discover People.
